Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute and MMG Insurance Inspire Next Generation of Leaders

Attendees at Go for the Gold event

The Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute and MMG Insurance proudly partnered to host a dynamic leadership event on Thursday, April 17, at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The event, themed “Go for the Gold,” brought together Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute students, community volunteers, and women from across MMG for an inspiring morning of connection and mentorship.

The event featured a keynote address from Julia Clukey, Vice President of People & Engagement at MMG Insurance, who shared insights from her leadership journey, particularly her experience on the Olympic Development team for luge as a teenager – then later as an Olympian. She encouraged the young leaders to recognize and embrace their unique strengths and use their voices to advocate for themselves and their vision.

The Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute serves high school students at Houlton High School and Presque Isle High School, empowering young women with the tools, confidence, and support needed to become strong, community-minded leaders. Through long-term mentorship and immersive experiences like this one, the Institute builds a network of support that extends well beyond graduation.

“We are delighted with the outstanding success of our recent combined event ‘Go For The Gold.’ The collaboration, creativity, vulnerability, and commitment from everyone involved was truly inspiring,” said Chantal Farnham, MMG Women Steering Committee Member and an Olympia Leaders Advisor. “We look forward to building on this momentum and achieving even greater success together through continued collaborative efforts.”

Attendees were welcomed by members of MMG Women and enjoyed breakfast, networking, and engaging breakout conversations. Olympia’s Leaders—student participants in the Institute—were encouraged to bring business cards and make connections with MMG professionals from across the region.

“Olympia Snowe and MMG events are important to me because I get to see first-hand, real-life leaders. To be able to see women in my community inspires me and gives me hope that I can be a leader myself,” said Ryan Perfitt, a junior at Houlton High School. “I learned a lot at the event because there were lessons about values, voice, and vision in the form of games. Being in the Olympia Snowe Woman’s Leadership Institute has caused me to grow exponentially. I have become a more confident leader in all aspects of my life including school, sports, and work.”

Kate Elmes, Director of Philanthropy at the Institute, noted that community partnerships are a crucial component for the development of these young leaders.

“We’re deeply grateful for MMG Insurance’s continued partnership and commitment to shaping future leaders in The County,” she said. “This event reflects the power of community, mentorship, and opportunity.”
